Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor, produced by Adobe Systems. There are 15 generations in the product line. The earlier versions are –1.6 (Illustrator 88), versions 2-5, 6-10, the later versions are CS–CS5.

Illustrator CS – CS5 versions include 3-dimensional possibilities which allow users create simple 3D objects.

Illustrator CS2 became integrated with the Adobe Creative Suite and available for the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. The main features of this version are live trace, live paint, colorized grayscale, Photoshop layer support, expanded stroke options, control palette, Adobe Bridge support, Wacom tablet support, SVG-t export.

The version CS3 included live color, Flash integration, eraser tool, document profiles, multiple crop areas, isolation mode and the color guide panel.

The version CS4 underwent a variety of improvements to old tools and got new tools.  The most important are artboards, which allow you to create multiple versions of a piece of work within a document transparency in gradients, blob brush, that makes possible overlapping vector brush strokes to easily merge or join,  others are: live gradient editing, separations previews, in-palette appearance editing.

The latest version, Illustrator CS5 appeared in April 2010.  There are lots of enhancements to the old tools, but most impressive are new features. They include a perspective grid tool, a bristle brush, which enables users to imitate real life, and perspective drawing tools, control over opacity in points on gradient meshes.
